    Attenuator

Interesting; I never really felt the need for one on my 5:50+ because of the 5W settings for each channel. Unless you are trying to get power tube overdrive on the clean channel then the 5W always has sounded pretty good to me at low volumes.

Placing Delay Pedal in Effects Loop Kills Your Tone?

Might be a silly question but...are you running the pedal on a battery? If so, change it and see what happens. Sometimes you just gotta make sure something is plugged in. That said, I run my Carbon Copy in the effects loop of my 5:50+ head with no noticeable tone degradation. It is an...

Help Finding a Non Metal Mesa

I vote Express 5:50+. I own the head and play through a 2x12 Avatar cab with Vintage 30 and G12H30 speakers, and the amp is awesome. Very versatile, sounds great at lower volumes, esp. at the 5W setting. I prefer the 25W setting on the blues/burn channel. EQ+contour is really a nice feature...

    EL84's versus EL34's and 6L6's

In my experience, the different tube character comes through even when not driven to power clip, which is what you're suggesting as the limit. A perfect example is a Divided by 13 JRT9/15 amp that has switchable power outputs - one a 2xEL84 output, the other 2x6V6, using the same pre-amp. I've...

5:50+ - wildly different volumes in each voice?

I find that my clean/crunch modes are pretty similar in volume to each other when the gain is set near the middle of the spectrum (i.e., between 10:00 and 1:00 or so). Burn is definitely louder than blues at the same gain setting. But you can't channel switch between modes on the same...

What is the best amp you have ever heard or played?

For me, the three best amps I've ever played: My Express 5:50+ (with Avatar 2x12 cab with a V30 and a G12H30) Mark V Combo Marshall Bluesbreaker reissue. I've played a lot of boutique amps (Dr Z, 65 Amps, PRS, Divided by 13, etc.), several other Mesas and a few vintage fenders that IMO didn't...

Load box made out of a paperless speaker?

I am speculating that it would likely make a horrible vibrating noise as the voice coil vibrated within the magnet chamber. I'm not a speaker expert, but I believe the surround and paper cone act to help keep the voice coil centered and properly aligned between the magnets (in addition to the...

Anyone notice a volume boost on Clean channel VS the other 3

It depends on where your gain setting is set. At high gain settings (~2 o'clock and higher), the clean channel will probably be louder, and will get progressively louder until the max gain setting in which the clean is fairly loud compared to crunch. At lower gain settings (like 1 o'clock and...

"Normal" hum on Mesa 5:25+ Combo

Agree to disagree. You changed a lot more than one word, and stated several things as fact that you then backtracked on or had to clarify. That said, I'm intrigued by Doug's tubes, and may look into them when I need to re-tube.

"Normal" hum on Mesa 5:25+ Combo

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but if you have to go back and correct, clarify, or update much of what you said, then yes, your post was full of misinformation. You implied that Mesa uses Chinese tubes all the time, which you clarified they don't necessarily use them all the time...

    Mesa Cabinets

I have an Avatar 2x12 cab that I really like, and their cabs are fully customizable (tolex, grille cloth, piping, speaker choices, open/closed back, impedance, etc.), and of very good quality. You can pick your speakers, they offer Celestion and Eminence, I believe, or you can get a 2x12 cab...

New member and NAD - Express 5:50 212 (YouTube vid included)

Great lead tone! Funny, I also sold my JVM210 head and 4x12 1960A cab after buying my 5:50+ (head) with Avatar 2x12 cab. Amazing amps, this express series.

Can you give me your opinion before I buy my 1st MESA amp?

Did you buy a Mesa speaker cab to go along with it? Or will you be using the direct out/ headphones only, initially?

Can you give me your opinion before I buy my 1st MESA amp?

Glad we could help, and I'm sure you'll really enjoy that amp. My Dad certainly does!
