Very interesting and thanks for posting. I agree w/you on the 5:25+ crunch. I was never able to get that kind of crunch out of my (previously owned) 5:50. FWIW, I sold my 5:50 to purchase a Road King II (v2) and missed the 5:50 from the day it left...I liked the 5:50 a lot better than the RK2...
I own one and with an overdrive you can do some metal, but tons of low end hardcore...no way
I previously owned a Road King II and that's more of the breed (rectifier)
...couldn't have put it better myself. 5:25+ is a fantastic amp. I like it a little better than the 5:50 2x12 combo and Road King II I used to own. Come to think of it, I liked the 5:50 better than the Road King II to be honest...
I've owned my 5:25+ head for 2 months now (I've also owned an Express 5:50 2x12 combo, as well as a Road King II combo). I literally sold my Road King II after purchasing this 5:25. I like the EL84 compression of the 5:25, I think, better than the 5:50 I previously owned prior to the Road King...
sAwesome, versatile and monstrous amp. Mesa's flagship 4-channel amp equipped with EL34's and 6L6's that are switchable per channel in addition to allowing blending of the 2 tube types if desired! This description doesn't even begin to scratch the surface, there's also your choice of solid-state...
Grohl was using Road Kings for a very long while, although I believe recently has switched to a handwired HiWatt and Vox setup...but if you're looking to capture the sound, along with all the versatility of the parts you mention...Road King. It's a monsterous amp.
A bit outdated, but decent...
Get a Fender Princeton Reverb (RI or not, but the RI's used and mint can be had for about $600...a steal).
They'll compliment your Express with their thick and lush tones, along with the vibrato and speed settings....it blends VERY nicely with the 5:50. I previously owned a 5:50 combo 212 and...
I just took delivery of my 5:25 plus head today. I have it running through a Recto 2x12 cab and it is LOUD. It will certainly handle even a larger-than-small gig. With its 5, 15 and 25 watt modes, per channel, it's an awesome at-home amp too. I previously owned a 5:50 2x12 combo which I sold to...
Hey there. I've got the same amp and love the **** thing. As for the channel volume vs. master volume usage...
Although as you know, either is doable, but I DO find that unless the individual channel volumes are dialed in at least 10 o'clock on the dial...it loses its thickness at volume that's...
HAHA...couldn't have articulated it better...although I like the sections highlighted in red.
Also...another option is the Road King II v2....a few more tones to the palette w/the tube-mixing capabilities as well as a few other options. It's a frigging monster amp, as is the Roadster. You can't...
