Express 5:25 HOW does it make 30W with only a pair of 84s?

Yes 30W. If you look at the power selection switch on the rear it goes from 5watts to 30 watts. Typically an EL84 makes (I know it doesn't MAKE watts but...) around 9 watts. A normal 18w amp uses a pair of EL84s. A 30 (AC30) or 36W (my Ceriatone) runs 4 EL84s to make ~30W I realize that there...

HELP!! Express 5:25 Contour is not working

Hey THANKS for the help and suggestions boogie. The first link to the schem wont work for me but don't worry...I'm pretty useless with one anyway. I do know how to safely discharge caps and root around inside an amp and chopstck it and look for clearly visible issues. I opened it up last night...

HELP!! Express 5:25 Contour is not working

Well I haven't yet tried the loop but I will maybe tonight. I did try a 1/4" cable into both channels' contour 1/4" footswitch jacks on the rear (instead of the stock pedal's goofy jack) and shorted it and nothing. Still haven't tried messing with V3, V4, or V5 yet. Fingers are crossed. I have...

Express 5:50 Plus or 5:25 Plus

Well I aint gonna be of any damned help because I have never played a 5:25+ OR a 5:50+. BUT...I do have a 5:25 and...from my dead cold hands is how someone will take this thing from me. I'm an old Marshall guy. Been playing an 18/36W EL84 Marshall clone since about 2006, got some other amps I...

Express 5:25 LOVE from a Marshall guy

Been playing Marshalls pretty much all my life. Been gigging bars since I was 12 (so like for 38 years now? God) and most of that time it was the tone vs volume war. I finally WON the fight when I discovered EL84 amps. Just recently went back to the 100W Marshalls...was GASsing for a DSL100 for...

HELP!! Express 5:25 Contour is not working

Hey all, I was here almost a year ago when I had a Stiletto Ace that I LOVED. Got lots of help here. Added an adjustable bias and then wound-up selling it :-( Oh well. Now three days ago in another trade deal I found myself owning a Mesa Express 5:25. Like the Stiletto, it was trade bait that...

    identifying a 12ax7

Any REAL Blackburn factory British Mullard 12AX7/ECC83 will have: -a single seam across the top of the tube -a (usually) acid etched set of codes across the glass near the base of the tube with I61, I63 or I65 above a datecode that starts with the letter B for Blackburn The datecodes are very...

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

Sounds like that might be the retainer. There are a pair of kinda semi-circular springsteel rings that "bite-into" the powertube bases to hold them in. Maybe one is bent away and barely touching the tube base and buzzing? I betcha. You can just bend it in or out. spray some contact cleaner onto...

    Almost no output[RESOLVED!!!!]

**** that sucks. There isn't a lot of traffic at this forum and especially sparse in the Stiletto forum. I would repost this in the after 1991 and later amps forum. I am in a similar boat. Was liking the amp. Swapped some preamp tubes. 2 got smashed when I put those supertight aluminum...

    Joined the party today

AMEN! I'm an old Marshall guy too and recently got a Stiletto Ace (head only in fawn). LOVE IT! Also didn't find it overly bright compared to the Marshalls I've owned but plugged some sweet preamp tubes in it anyway and then did an adjustable bias mod and biased-up a sweet old pair of TESLA 34s...

    stiletto ace 2x12 tube question

You can run any 12AX7 in any position (V1-V5) without doing anything other than unplugging and plugging a new one in it's socket. Powertubes are a different story. If you ask any non-mesa owner with a fixed bias amp we will tell you that you absolutely MUST bias your amp when swapping...

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. If you haven't diagnosed the problem yet...to eliminate the possibility (the strong possibility) that it's a preamp tube, take a KNOWN GOOD 12AX7 (maybe from your friend's working amp) and one by one, replace your 12AX7s with the known good one. So like start at...

Need to tame that high end? I have a few vintage tubes FS

If you have a Stiletto or a DR..well anything really that is sounding a little bright/ice-picky than you'd prefer, a single RFT 12AX7 in V1 can really warm things-up and lend some legitimacy and 3-D-ness to your tone. I'm not a dealer or a store. I have a few tubes including 3 or 4 RFT 12AX7s...

Some thoughts on the Stiletto Ace I would like to share

Got one in a trade too not that long ago. Head version of the Ace though not the combo. I too am an old Marshall guy. I've had a couple of old JCMs but always play and have played older nmv 4-holers and like you say, I've NEVER run the T, M or P past 2 on my old Marshalls. The Middle is usually...
