Reverb gone, lamps, foot switch

Hey guys, I own an Express 5:50, bought around 2011. A couple of weeks ago, my reverb stopped working. I sent it to my local tech and he changed the whole reverb tank. Thanks Mike (LATRETCH in Greenfield Park, near Montreal). Good job, it works fine now.

Couple of questions:

1. Is there a way I could have prevent that? I don't recall any impact, I'm very carefull when I carry it around.

2. Do you guys replace lamps with ONLY Mesa lamps?
