Favorite Guitar and Boogie Pairings

Most threads here addressing tone focus on MB amps themselves, as if their tonal characters are a fixed reality. I've got five different Boogies and I marvel how each amp responds differently to different guitars. I'll like a particular amp with almost any guitar, but magic will happen with guitar A on one amp and guitar B on another. I love my 335 w burstbuckers on my Mark V combo, but my Electra-Dyne, not so much. For that amp, my PRS custom 24 w stock pups is the sauce. It would be interesting to hear folks share their experiences with guitar/MB amp pairings.

I generally prefer lower output pickups with the early MK series. Something like an LP Jr with P90 or an HH Fender with overwound PAF type pickups.

For the later IIB circuit and the IIC+ I prefer something medium-high output. Same goes for some of the newer brighter sounding amps (Stiletto etc)

I use Les Pauls and A Fillmore 50 .. Great Combination

I have the 490/498 combo in three different LPs: Studio, Standard, Standard Doublecut. I always thought they sound great with the Mark V through a V30 1/2 stack. Although, I have Seymours that also are great.

Same as when I first got 'em. My 83 Ibanez Artist & DC-5.

I use Les Paul’s primarily and an 87 gibson Flying V. The burst buckers in my LP standard pair nicely with the high output on my mkIII and IV. I also have a Bill Keliher LP signature that has some Lace Sensor pick ups. Again, a darker pick up and pairs well. I like my Flying V the most. I bought an early 80’s Duncan SH6 for the bridge, and I put an early 2000’s burst bucker in the neck. The duncan is HOT. I pulled out the 500k pots and put in some Gibson 300k’s. This to me is perfect sounding, and currently my favorite guitar with my MK’s.

A great question btw! We spend months tweaking these amps, then plug in another guitar and it’s all different again lol. I do enjoy the process though…my other band mates joke that I spend more time experimenting than just playing. They may be right :/
