I just got some Svetlana el34s today so I thought I'd do the big comparison in the Lonestar Classic 1x12 and pass you on the info...

First section is just a fat clean sound I had dialed in, played with a 2002 LP Std middle position--straight, with some reverb (warm). Second Zep section was with the same guitar, bridge p/u no reverb. The little SRV ditty at the end was with the same setting as the first section with a neck Fralin vintage hot on my custom Warmoth Strat and a Tubescreamer w/TS-808 mod with all dials at 12:00.

Settings are posted here:

EQ of course could be optimized along with mic placement but that would spoil the test, now, wouldn't it?

Let me know your opinions on which tone you like better...no constructive critiques on my playing, though!

Nice clips, thanks for posting.

I didn't look at the eq settings link, so I don't know if they are the same for both tube sets. I let my ears tell me which I prefered.

On the Allmans clip, there were bits from each that I liked better than the other, but ultimately I liked the 6L6 version better. The sound was, for lack of a better term, "sweeter."

On the Zep clip, again the 6L6 clip was my favorite. The sound has more depth, more highs and lows, more complexity to my ears. It's just a more pleasing version, to me anyway, to listen to. The EL34 version was like a flat eq in comparison.

For the SRVs, well, I just think an EL34 is totally wrong for this style of music. That said, the sound was not bad.

In my opinion, if I had to use a Lonestar, I would stick to the 6L6.

Agree with Cvan in that the EQ on EL34's sounds flatter than the 6L6's. Definately liked the 6's better on the SRV lick, sounded to dirty and not enough ntoe definition.

Liked the 34's better on the Zep clip but not on the Allman clip.

Think I would stick with the 6L6's unless I was playing a bunch of Zep or maybe AC/DC.
