Help: Mesa Strategy 400 Poweramp - no output channel a

I recommend cleaning the level pots / tube pins and sockets. I repaired a fuse popping 295 simulclass with simple cleaning.

Replacement reverb rank suggestions for Mark V

Short answer - yes, make sure the impedance is the same.

    Modern Altec 417-8 replacement?

You can make or most kits come with centering shims. It is the critical fit when re-coning. Cleaning the voice coil gap is also critical. Have you checked that the existing voice coil is rubbing? - or that the existing voice coil is blown - or open.

    Modern Altec 417-8 replacement?

If you have some technical skills - You can re-cone that yourself. I've done 4 - 5 re-cones and it's pretty basic. You need to work clean. Re-cone kits for that are less than 100.00.

Mark V Effects Loop Not Working

It might have just been a dirty jack connector, or the jack connector itself was bent a little and the weight of the cable or whatever caused a disconnection. good news is - it's possibly a simple mechanical fix and not internal circuit related.

What are Mesa Boogie going to do about the tube scarcity?

There's a good sized steady market in the Us.... and there will be an opportunity to market a high end modernized manufacturing and engineering in the global market for tubes. Truth is: digital modeling and each cycle of new software has a VERY VERY short life span. It has a huge market as well...

Where would one go to to test old tubes to see if they are still good?

I would advise against buying used power tubes unless they're described as new-"ish" lol - or the seller gives some kind of assurance for return if they're bad. I've bought used power and Pre-amp tubes a couple of times and never got burned. If you can find a music store that does in house...

1989 Studio Preamp - disconnected lead from pcb

I just replaced a half dozen Orange caps on my Studio pre about 2 weeks ago. Doing anything under the board is a bit difficult. I would recommend that you do solder from the back side to make sure you get a good solder joint if possible. You may be able to solder from the top side if you have a...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Just another follow-up regarding the Studio preamp. couldn't find a decent schematic - but a little thought about the circuits involved, I ordered new orange caps through out and ended up changing them out around v3 and v4 positions. This fixed a volume issue with Right channel output and...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

The amp isn't blowing fuses any longer.... and I don't have a good known reason why. I did unleash the circuit boards enough that I could get to both leads on the caps. After measuring them and doing some simple pot and socket cleaning, they held. These are the front panel 1A fast blow fuses...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Lots of good information imparted in this discussion : Can anyone tell me where I might find a legible copy of the Studio Preamp schematic? Every copy I've come across is handwritten and even when parcelled out to multiple pages and blown up they're still nearly illegible.

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

I did a test with known good capacitors - and you are absolutely correct. the ESR is reduced when the caps are in parallel. My conclusion that all is well with cap measurements in my amp is not necessarily so. I'll revisit and pull at one lead on caps I can access. Thanks for reminder on this...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

The one I bought is pretty low cost. It's a Sinestek MESR100. You can find it on e-bay and amazon etc. There is another that is pretty low cost that measures capacitance as well. I wish I spent a little more for that one : it's the Peak Electronic ESR70. A Google search for ESR meter will get...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Nearly all materials degrade over time. But, I wonder if number of hours in use subjected to voltage is a better measure of a caps life span.

re-measured 30 uF caps and they were below 1.0 ohm. I misread the scaling on the meter.

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Thanks for confirmation. I was surprised how steady all the measurements were on all the electrolytics. I have just a little less knowledge needed to be dangerous, all this information is very helpful. I've always been sceptical of the " Just change the caps " advice. I re-capped my 79 Twin a...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Just a quick follow up. The 295 was build in1987 . All tubes tested great, very stable and well matched. I took all the pains to allow removal of the boards - enough to test ESR on all electrolytics, they were all very low ESR, basically like new. So - being that the amp looks basically new and...
