Watford Valves Harma Cryo Tubes for LoneStar Special

Please report on your experience wit Waterford Cryos. I'm considering the low gain retube, but ordered a Mulard NOS Recto from another dealer.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

I haven't heard the Brimars yet, but all of the reports I've read, especially Waterford Values tests of 12AX&'s, declare it an excellent choice, nearly Mullard in quality at less $$$. There's a guy in Canada, kraudio, selling them for about $90 per and will cryo treat them for free if you like.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Sorry to hear about the reissue Mullards. Oh well better they die than I waste hard earned $ on junk. As to the Brimars, I'm looking at them hard for V-1 and maybe V-3. I've got my Teslas(not JJ) but am holding them back at present until I can do a complete retube.

I totally missed it! Too focused I guess.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

You're welcome. The new issue Tung Sol's and Mullard's look interesting as well and not too expensive. I'm waiting to read some reports, but at the cost they may well be worth taking a chance on especially for V-3 and V-4. Good luck. Mike also has Mullard NOS 5y3 rectifier tubes. That's my...

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Tube World has a nice selection, but their page is a little difficult to follow. Mike @ SND Tube Sales is a good guy no BS and has a great selection.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Seedy is okay as long as the tubes are as advirtised, the change is right, and there is an escape route. I agree caught is necessary, but reputable vendors have some ANOS tubes. In this manner I'll do some experimenting prior to laying down bigger bucks.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Some ANOS tubes are available, cost less, and should work well. I've seen some long-plate Mullards for $75 each and test as new.

I agree with the choice from the samples given. The harmonics from each tube seemed to work together for a full sound that did not overlap one another or muddy it up. Hopefully the cables will fix the other problem.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Centainly better than stock. I really like clips 1 ,4 and 6. Was unable to get #9. I can't wait to gather the rest of my tubes and dial this puppy in. For your power tubes how close do the pairs match one another individually and each other?

    LSS Speaker Swaps

Sorry, I checked the Mesa site and did not see the Filmore speakers. I did the 25 watt reissues from Celestion. I hadn't seen these before. Could they be somewhere else and I just didn't see them? Anyway, I've been looking at the tranny upgrade by Mercury Magnetics. Preliminary research...

    LSS Speaker Swaps

I loaded my 2x12 with Celestion Golds. Greatly improved my tones with my Les Paul. I do have a 2x12 Recto cab with Vintage 30's in it and may switch it out with 12H 30's in the near future.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Sweet. There does appear to be anything that matches NOS tubes. We're in trouble when they run out. What's the "average" life (hours of use) that you are getting from your preamp and power tubes. The Mesa literature says 2-3 years for preamp tubes and 1 1/2 -2 years for power tubes. Mine is...

    Tesla. Sorry.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

A Teasla 12AX7 may well do the trick, or you may look to alter "ghe chain" by changing your tubes V1 and V2. That's why I'm looking hard at the 5751 in V2 and the 7025 in V5 and maybe V3. I play with humbuckers and my LSS can be a little muddy with them, at certain settings, and it limits my...

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

In one of your older statements you gave these as your tube setup: V1 Long-plate Mullard 12AX7 with halo getter V2 RFT ECC83 V3 Sylvania black-plate 12AX7 V4 GE long-plate 12AX7 V5 Mullard CV4024 It appears that you were using the GE in the reverb then. Did you switch that with the PI? Or...

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

What have you been using? As to reverb the 12AX7 appears to be a good choice, but NOS may be an unnecessary use of money as the difference is minimal in tone enhancement. Others have reported using the new Tung Sol with good results. I plan to use the stock Mesa there and use my limited funds...

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

Waterford Values is selling 3 different preamp set of cryo-tubes to clean up the LSS. This looks like some food for thought, especially the 7025 in #5. I just got 2 Tesla 12AX7's. I will continue to put together my NOS replacements for the stock tubes over the next 3 months.

    Does LSS Cut it Live

I'll keep the Emenince speakers in mind when I go to redo my extension cab. First I want to insulate the cab with auralex and see how much difference that makes. As to the Golds, WOW! You're right a lot of money, but WOW!

This looks interesting. I've been looking at a Keeley Blues Driver for a bump.
