    Speakers are a funny thing

The Gold needs a lot of breaking in. After about 30 hours it's ALIVE!

    Mods for sale!!!

How much do you charge to install a bias pot? Do you fix the bias warmer or make it fully adjustable?

So increasing the bias would warm up the tones?

Alnico Blues or Greenbacks with an LSS?

I didn't test the blue. I wanted the extra room with the 50 watts x2 instead of 15x2. My thinking was this would give me more margin for error and or safety. I did listen to the blues intently in a Vox Brian May model and they were great. I do think I like the Golds better, but not by much.

Lonestar Special 5Y3 rectifier alternatives, anyone?

Thanks for the update. I'll need to get the volt-plate info from Mesa, gather the equipment to measure and get the set bias switched so it can be adjusted accordingly.

Alnico Blues or Greenbacks with an LSS?

Of course my LSS 2X12 with 30-35 watts max has more room to operate than a LSC 1X12 with 50-100 watts.

Lonestar Special 5Y3 rectifier alternatives, anyone?

Thanks for the reply. I have stock Mesa EL-84's thus far. I know that they bias cool, very cool. This may well be a cushion, but I want to be safe. I'm looking at retubing with GE NOS's in nthe near future. What should be bias be? Floor plate voltage etc? I'm a newbie at this. For what...

Lonestar Special 5Y3 rectifier alternatives, anyone?

I got the Mullard 5Y3 and it looks great. During this time I located a local dealer and I picked up a Mullard GZ32/5V4 tube. As I underastand the previous posts, especially from stokes, I do not need to do anyhting else other than insert the 5V4? As a non-electrican person I want to be sure...

Alnico Blues or Greenbacks with an LSS?

I put Golds in my 2x12 and love the difference. Greater seperation, clear tones, and volume. The **** thing breathes! It's alive.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

I got the 5V4 today as well. No Mullard name on it. I'll look for an etch code. It is brown base and has a CV 593 and an etch code on the other side too small for me to make out.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

I purchased this from Michael Marx at SND tubes. You can check his site or contact him for info. I was not the one who wrote to the other place. My reference to "Britain MAG" may be inaccurate. I just had eye surgery and I can't read small print well. Sorry if there are any inaccuracies in...

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

I'm learning to do this. My first pic is not clear. The tube says Mullard within the Sheild. Underneither this is says 5y3g. Under that is a W oval with BVA in itBritain Mag underneith that. I'll attempt to attach my poor pics.

Lonestar Special - preamp tube replacements

I got my 5Y3 Mullard on Wednesday. Wow looks great. While waiting I read some interesting comments on using a 5V4 in lieu of the 5Y3. Any thoughts on this? My research looks compelling for this move. Obviously either move terminates my Boogie Warantee, but if either tube improves my amp so be it.
