The best substitutes of MESA STR-415 & 416

The Sylvania's are great tubes but there are some newer production tubes I like. I use Groove Tubes 6l6R's with a #4 rating in my Simul's and my wide chassis c+. In the HR combos I have 415's and Tung Sol 6l6gc's. The short chassis HR has Groove Tubes GE reissue 6l6's. I think preamp tubes have...

Mark III to Mark II mod

I tried a Mark lll+ red stripe and a Studio Preamp side by side a couple of years ago. The Studio Pre was closer to the feel of a c+ than the lll+. There are deals out there. I got the wide chassis factory c+ for $1660. I paid $1595 for the llc DRG and road case + about $700 for the c+ upgrade...

    Mesa Boogie MkIIC Combo

The first Mark IIc I bought didn't impress me at all. I played it for maybe a minute. Packed it up and shipped it back to Mesa for the upgrade and cap job. The second one I bought I almost wanted to keep stock. It sounded so much better than the first one. I asked Mike B. if the later Mark IIc's...

Just got my first IIC+ and wow

Congrats! When you clean the knobs try not to get any cleaner on the numbers. Even water can wash the paint off. Enjoy the amp!

    Poll: How Old Are You?

I bought my first c+ when I was 18, now I'm 52. It sat in the closet for years. Now that I'm an empty nester I've been making up for lost time. I've bought 5 more c+'s in the last 2 years and I'm always looking for another one.

    Mesa Boogie MkIIC Combo

I just talked to Rich at Mesa. They still have STR-415’s. $250 for a pair. I never tried to clean the springs.

    Mesa Boogie MkIIC Combo

I would send the Sylvania tubes with the amp. My favorite preamp tubes are nos Chinese military. C+’s originally came with Tungsram 12ax7’s. The Chinese tubes are brighter and have a little more gain. The springs in the reverb tank get gunked up over the years. If the tank in your amp is...

    Mesa Boogie MkIIC Combo

I had Mike B. uprade an HR and a DRG. The DRG might be the best of my c+'s. It does add up sending the amp back to Mesa, shipping + mod + new caps + repairs. But it's well worth. The amp comes back sounding awesome. If I lived close to Mesa I'd have Mike B. work on the other 4 c+'s I own. If you...

Mark III Power Tube and speaker Question

I use the 5881’s in my Simul c+’s to tame some of highs because they are a lot brighter then my HR’s. Even with the 5881’s I have to keep the presence on 2 or lower. Mike B. told me the only 6l6’s I could safely use in the Simul c+’s are the red color coded Mesa 5881’s. I’ve blown fuses trying...

    MKIIc+ Tubes

I had EL34’s in my DR and DRG but now I prefer Sovtek 5881’s with nos Chinese 12ax7’s. The 5881’s tame some of the brightness.

Was looking at Celesiton Web and found this. 150W Red back

I installed the Redbacks in the closed bottom half a couple of days ago. I don't know what the cab weighs with the Redbacks but it's managable. The Mark 5 25 and Mini Rec sound really good thru it. If I didn't own a c+ I could live with just the Mark 5 25 on the crunch channel alone. The Mini...

Was looking at Celesiton Web and found this. 150W Red back

I bought another Redback and pulled the one out of my DRG and installed them in the top open half of the 4x12. Sounds great! Very balanced with my HSS Strat, huge with my Les Paul. I ordered another 2 today to put in the closed bottom half. I thought about putting 2 EV's in the 4x12 but I want...

Was looking at Celesiton Web and found this. 150W Red back

I found a vintage 4x12. It has MC-90's in the open top and VS-12's in the closed bottom. It actually sounds really good (even after cleaning the speaker cones with a damp rag). It's sounds like a bigger version of a combo amp. I still want to load it with the Redbacks but I just saw the 2018...

WTB: 1980's Mesa 4x12 with metal grill. Chicago area.

Looking for a 1980's Mesa 4x12 cab with the metal grill in the Chicago area.

What Mark Series Amps Require NOS Output Tubes?

I use Tung Sol 6l6's in my HR's without any problems. The only modern tube that has given me trouble in the HR's are Groove Tube CHP's. They sound awesome until the fuse blows. I have New Sensor Svetlana EL34's and 6l6's in my DR.

Was looking at Celesiton Web and found this. 150W Red back

The Redback does sound really good when pushed. I'm looking for an old Mesa 4x12 with the metal grill to use with the wide chassis c+ I just bought. Gonna load it Redback's.

    Awesome! Wish I was there.

After a few days with the IIC+...first impressions

I just talked to Mike B. about the bright mod on the Simul Class c+'s. I thought it made it less bright like the 100 watters. It actually makes it brighter. Oooops! I was wondering why it was still so bright with Mesa/JJ 12ax7's and Sovtek 5881's. Mike said he would talk to my local tech about...
