Picked up an early Mark III...

Are you getting the R2 mod? All of my Mark III's have the 3+\R2 mods. I highly recommend it.

    Coliseums

A c+ has a throaty growl and looser low end compared to a III+. It's more noticeable at higher volumes.

    Coliseums

Finally got around to doing a high volume side by side of the Coli's. Got the volume up to 2.5. The c+ is still the King. The c+ sound field is bigger, fuller, richer, more detailed. The III+ is narrower and less detailed. The only problem is 2.5 is too loud unless your playing the Grand Canyon!

    Mark III with a Variac

I use a variac with all of my amps. The line voltage into the house can get as high as 130 volts. I use the variac to throttle it down to 115-120 volts.

OK, now for preamp tubes (for Mark III)- help!

My favorite preamp tubes are Mesa 7025/Beijing Chinese Military. Nice cleans and very touch responsive, fluid overdrive.

Will any EL34/6L6's work in my Mark III?

You can usually use Groove Tubes with the 4,5 or 6 rating. Don't forget about JJ tubes. They're made in Slovakia.

(for lead playing) who *doesn't* prefer iic+ or iii+ over the original iii?

C+'s are great for Lead tones but which c+? If I had to choose a c+ other than my Coli it would probably be an upgraded HRG. The feel and tone is somewhere between an original HRG and DRG. Still tight enough for rhythm and loose enough for liquid leads.

    25 combo conversion?

I use my MV25 with a Mojotone Lite open back 1x12 loaded with an EV12L. Nice overall tone. Loud and light.

    NAD: IIC+ DRG

    Congrats on the new amp!

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

The waiting is the hardest part!

    Coliseums

I agree that the Coli's have more than enough gain. I want my III+'s to be as close to a c+ as they can get. That's why I bought III's with the 105 transformer. The III+ SRG's and Coli also have the same transformers as the c+'s.

Mark III blue stripe combo service

It will probably be around $300 for service and return shipping. Are you shipping just the chassis? If you want the III+/R2 mod it's an extra $200.

Cleaning an EQ on a Mkiii Coliseum

    Pressure washer is more fun!

    Coliseums

I played the Coli thru a Mesa 2x15 bass cab loaded with EV's. Massive low end! A little loose and sluggish but usable. I'm gonna try it with the 2x15 and a 4x12 this weekend. Let me know if you hear it!

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

Are you gonna have Mike B. reduce the brightness or leave it as is? I have him reduce the brightness on the Simul's so they're more like the early Simul c+'s. Reducing the brightness makes the Lead channel smoother and more vocal. Also makes the Presence more useful.

Cleaning an EQ on a Mkiii Coliseum

Yep! I love my Classic 50 and Penta. You can also strap the amp to the roof racks and take it thru a car wash.

Cleaning an EQ on a Mkiii Coliseum

I usually hose off any amp I buy in the backyard and then put it in the dryer on delicate.

Mike B. told me not to use contact cleaner. It will wash the grease out of the sliders.

    Coliseums

I did a side by side of the Coli's today at low volume because my wife is working from home. I used a Mesa stereo cab with C90's. They sound and feel really close. I don't know if I could tell the difference in a blind test. Maybe there will be differences at higher volumes.
