My guess would be pre-amp tube, maybe one in the final gain stages of Ch3 if there is no high pitched noises on other channels. Check out the tube chart in the manual to which ones it might be.

I would say the VII has more thump than the V. But these types of things are subjective! I’ve never owned or played a IV so can’t comment as to how the new ones compare to the original.

On occasion (more often than I’d like to admit) I’ve accidentally flipped the cables so FX out of amp goes to output of pedal board on occasion. The result is as you described. So, if something is plugged into the loop when your issue is happening first thing is to check the cable routing.
