    My Mark IIB freakin’ rocks!

What year & configuration did you end up with?

    Advice sought re downsizing

Here's a tone comparo I did that you might like. https://youtu.be/j5G729T4Jwg I think the Mark 25 & 35 are the best Marks since the IIC+, personally, and I've had them all. It's not a direct replacement- but it is very good. Does having a smaller amp that's almost as good & putting a couple...

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

I'd say that's the added clarity. It's like taking a blanket off the speaker. That is one of the hallmarks of a C+ vs. other Marks.

(clips inside) Mark III DRG red str, high-gain lead tone with *mids*?! critique welcome!

I never pulled them both before. There is a small difference because it adds a 5th gain stage but it wasn't enough (to me) to matter. The biggest difference with the mod is how clear & smooth it is, and yet crazy high gain. That and the extra compression. FWIW I've sold all my C+ and I have...

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

Alright guys, the amp is back! I've been playing it for a few days to break it in since it's always stiff with a fresh cap job. At first TBH I was a little put off because the hair is gone- it's a LOT smoother & more open and clear like a C+. But, at the same time it's more compressed like a...

(clips inside) Mark III DRG red str, high-gain lead tone with *mids*?! critique welcome!

Personally if people are scooping their lead tone that tells me they only play at home & not with a band. In the band mix I either turn the GEQ off for leads or switch to a frowny face GEQ. Your tone is right on for a stock III. I like pull deep for leads but not for high gain rhythm. To me...

MkIIB or MkIII for an old guy?

On the IIB just the loop mod. Like I said the only sacrifice was the pristine cleans. I'm a metal guy so that's OK with me- I don't have a need for anything cleaner than AC/DC tone. Yes it also gives you a post-loop master volume which is nice. I can have the two channels set easily to switch...

MkIIB or MkIII for an old guy?

If you don't want any mods you just deal with Rich and pay Mesa. If you want it loop modded you will pay Mike separately & directly for the mod. It fixes the loop and increases the gain. The clean channel isn't as clean though. I would recommend it unless you really need a pristine clean...

(for lead playing) who *doesn't* prefer iic+ or iii+ over the original iii?

I had a HRG X101 which was my least favorite. It was a C then a C+ then a C++ while I had it. (Well ok if i'm being honest the JP was my least favorite, which is HRG based and despite what they say has the tranny dimensions & lower voltage from the X101.) I had a DRG 105 that was a factory +...

MkIIB or MkIII for an old guy?

I have both, they are different. To me the IIB is a classic rock to early 80s metal monster. The III is a late 80s & 90s metal and thrash machine. The 60W unit is pentode and super fast. The Simul unit is smoother due to the Class A pair being wired in triode. I did this tone comparo a couple...

(for lead playing) who *doesn't* prefer iic+ or iii+ over the original iii?

For lead tones nothing is as good as a C+. For rhythms there are things about my IIB+ and my Red Stripe that I like as much but not better than the C+. ..for a LOT less $$. I've sold all of my C+ ultimately because I don't like how they sit in the band mix. Too nasally. Although, if I was a...

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

The work is done!! Now to wait for shipping!! Mike found a LOT of things that needed attention. Cost was up there. From my perspective everything (but the reverb) worked great so it's a good feeling that he really went through the amp. Always worth the service cost. I did find out that in...

Mark III blue stripe combo service

In years past it was in the $300-400 range all in. The last couple I've had serviced were both in the $450 range. Still 100% worth it for a keeper!

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

This amp doesn't need a brightness reduction- I've been running the presence on 7. It's nothing like the blue & green stripes in that regard. That said, I figure he's going to do what he's going to do. :)

Coli tone test at higher volumes? You'll have to poll your neighbors because your ears will be shot!

My Mark III is about to become a Mark III++.

Shipped it off yesterday! Now I wait. Probably a little longer than normal due to the state of the world, but that's ok. This red stripe DRG long head is my third Mark III and the first one I've bonded with. The other two were blues that were too harsh for me. It was in generally good...

    Coliseums

I'll start a new thread about it as not to derail the Coli thread. :) I will say though, slaving the IIC+ and the III into the IIB Coli power section tells me a lot about my preferences. I much prefer a Coli power section with any Mark preamp compared to a desirable preamp with a lesser power...

    Coliseums

So I sent my DRG red stripe in today for service & the III++ mod. Going to do a before / after tone vid. :) I've come to realize that the power section is possibly more important, to me, on a vintage Mark amp.
